Electro Boogie: Dam Funk Australian Tour

Dam Funk electro boogie The Basement Sydney

Dam-Funk – 10 West

California knows how to party. We all know it’s true — from the old school West Coast electro funk from the likes of Egyptian Lover, The World Class Wreckin’ Cru and the L.A Dream Team to the G-funk sound of the 90s a la Dr. Dre, Warren G and N.W.A, the West Coast sound is dripping with funk. Tupac made it official with his hit California Love — featuring Roger of Zapp & Roger on his famous talkbox — LA is all about smooth funk and good time party jams — It ain’t nothin’ but a gangster party ya’ll!

So it comes as no surprise that California’s Dam Funk has got that daaaamn funk! The man started his career in the G-funk era of LA, playing keys and sometimes on production duties for cats like Mack 10, Westside Connection and MC Eight. Those smooth gangsta melodies can still be heard in his sound today, but his music is much more than a G-funk revival. With a huge electro boogie sound (think early Prince, Zapp & Roger or the man George Clinton) with fat and warm analogue-synth funk basslines, the Dam Funk sound is pure electro funk. What really stands out about his sound is that he manages to use very a modern production style without losing the old school feeling, yet it doesn’t sound like just a throwback to the past, managing to sound up-to-date and fresh without coming across as tacky — dude has genuine soul!

Peanut Butter Wolf signed Dam-Funk to his label Stones Throw in 2007, and homeboy has been busy since then producing several ‘modern funk’ 12″s as well as rocking fresh remixes over the way. Last year his debut solo album was released — a whopping 5LP box set titled Toeachizown. Over 2 hours of original funked out soul, electrofunk and boogie jams.

This track 10 West is from the second disc of the Toeachizown 5LP set. Smooth electro boogie with a big 808 beat, smooth synth melodies and plenty of cowbell hits for ya’ll 80s electro freaks! Play it loud and feel that groove baby!

Dam Funk is currently in the middle of his first Australian tour (sorry for the late notice) and is rocking a show in Melbourne tonight. Cold Crush will of course be catching him tomorrow night at The Basement in Sydney, and his final show will be in Brisbane on Sunday night. Dude has a real impressive liveset — check out the video below of him jamming hard on a goddamn Keytar, recorded live in Cali, 2009. Needless to say, we are looking forward to the show! Hope to catch some of you Sydney cats down there.
