Inkswel & The Sons of Fuzz – DeepSEAVOYAGE
(Cold Crush exclusive!)
A few months ago we caught Melbourne DJ/producer Inkswel doing a show at Tone, and he caught our ears with his smooth electric boogie sound. As well as supporting Dam Funk in Melbourne he has a several releases in the works, so Cold Crush had a chat to the man to find out what he is up to!
What’s the story with DeepSEAVOYAGE?
This track DeepSEAVOYAGE is from an upcoming release on Cuckoo Records. It will be a digital release to start with but will be coming out on CD and wax in the future.
This is one of my first sorta solo endeavors to an extent, even though I’d consider it as practice for the real stuff next year.
We are looking forward to that vinyl, this shit is sounding real smooth. Is this your first release?
It’s not my first release… I did a 7″ on Wax Museum Records in 2009. I handled production, with vocals by New York’s John Robinson aka Lil Sci from Scienz Of Life (Rawkus era). That is on more of a hip hop vibe. I’ve done around 3 CDr albums on over the years, beats and blends… nothing official.
Real stuff? Tell us more!
This record fits in the beats world… It’s stuff I’ve made, it’s not over-produced. It’s kind of DJ tool and tracks at the same time. But next year I’ll be working with vocalists and musicians… I guess in more of a pop direction but without being ‘pop’ music — think a big production sound with a Quincy Jones vibe, but still with my signature Inkswel sound.
How did you get into production? Were you musically trained or do you come from more of a DJ background?
I’m a DJ first and foremost.. a record collector. To me being a DJ and a producer are basically the same thing, whether you’re making a track or a vibe, it still envokes the same human emotions.
I started making beats when I was around 14. Actually I started DJing at around the same time. My first first bit of gear was an Alesis HR16 drum machine and a Casio SK1. From there I moved to computer, then SP303, then the MPC. I have the MPC2000XL. That is my baby. It’s not the only thing I use, but it’s still my favorite toy. It’s just a simply made but solid machine.
I don’t mess with software too much… I wouldn’t know how to use MIDI. Though I still have Mac with Logic for tracking things and doing final mixes — I’m not a caveman!
So who are the Sons of Fuzz?
‘Sons of Fuzz’ is my crew and label too. A bunch of cats: Myself (Inkswel), Ocky, Benny Badge aka Freekwency aka Nite Class, Andras Fox, Admin, DL and some other losers. We’re all centred around the same vibe I guess… boogie, beats, 80s hip hop, synth shit, New York disco mentality, early proto house, UK soul…
Go on..
…drum machines, 808s, 909s, Moog, Korg, Yamaha DX, talk box…haha, Cazal sunglasses, bubblegum aftershave. The soul in music is what we push!
Yeah I push bboy music… that is all! Anything else you heard about me was a lie or rumour. I drink ginger beer and read books on my days off… on the other days I make beats and spin better records than you. It’s not an ego thing, we just live good music. Period.
Oh yeah, everyone should stop listening to Diplo. Go listen to Dam Funk and Floating Points, Theo Parrish, Moodymann, Egyptian Lover… get some funk in your life!
Word.
