With his erotic electro funk sound, the man Jimmy Edgar has been described by some as ‘the saviour of real electro’. An award-winning fashion photographer by day & electro musician by night, Jimmy’s sound combines elements of electro, jazz, soul, R’n'B and IDM with an extra-heavy dose of sleaze.
He comes from Detroit, where he grew up playing at raves by age 15, and not long after he released a string of records on labels like Poker Flat, Isophlux Records NYC and Merck Records from Miami. He quickly grew a rep for his live acts, playing shows in NYC, Miami, Vancouver and as far as Japan, which led to him being invited to play at the world renowned Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2003. By this time he’d also gained the attention of Warp Records, and it was at the D.E.M.F that he debuted as a Warp artist.
His first full length album Color Strip was released on Warp in 2006, featuring stylish electro funk tracks with a glitchy IDM influence, and including the infamous I Wanna Be Your STD. As well as his solo material he has remixed for cats including infamous Detroit electro duo Aux 88, Machinedrum, err… Will Smith (we’ll let that one slide), and even an unofficial remix of Michael Jackson, not to mention his other projects including Creepy Autograph, Noir Friction and Morris Nightingale.

This track is the first single from, and opening track of his brand new album XXX, released in June 2010 on German label K7. The new album has lost a lot of the IDM feel, with a straight up funked out electro boogie sound — Function Of Your Love reminds us of something we would very much expect to hear from Bumper or Dam Funk, which can’t be a bad thing. Smooooth funk dripping beats that we know you are gonna dig!

Jimmy Edgar is doing a whirlwind weekend tour of Australia along with West Coast bad man Egyptian Lover, with shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisane. As we previously mentioned, RETALI8 & OSC-001 will be reppin’ the Cold Crush Wreckin’ Cru at the Sydney show, the night after Cold Crush at Tone.
