Mixed Up In The Hague

I’m not going to fuck with you. This mix was recorded and released 10 years ago now. As far as mixes go, it’s pretty much ancient. But that said, it is still one of the dopest electro mixes i’ve ever heard; it is responsible for opening a LOT of peoples eyes and ears (mine included) to these old tracks, as well as the underground scene that was going on in places like The Hague.
Anyway, to call it a straight electro mix doesn’t do it justice — in the mix are elements of old school electro, italo disco, detroit techno and new wave. It pretty much has it all: funk basslines, vocoders, cheesy vocals, tr808, tribal drumming and some of the catchiest synth-riffs you are gonna hear. Straight up unashamed party rocking shit.
I-F is basically the man. Clearly he kills it on the decks — he does with vinyl what most DJs can’t even touch using Ableton and CDJs no matter how fancy the technology might get, but on top of that he also runs the infamous Viewlexx label, along with sublabels Holographic and Murder Capital, was a part of legendary acid band Unit Moebius, and was also the man behind long-running internet radio station The Cybernetic Broadcasting Systems. CBS was really something else…a 24 hour online radio station that played a huge mix of music, from Italo disco classics, to grimy underground electro, old school hip hop, dub, film scores and Italian gangster jazz. CBS closed operations in 2008, BUT was reborn as Intergalactic FM — Which stream an incredible 4 stations of underground music to choose from. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.
Along with his hit track Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass, this mix also played a very big responsibility for the birth of the electroclash sound, but we won’t hold that against it. Ps, just quietly, at the risk of blowing a little street cred, in retrospect I think some of the early electroclash stuff really wasn’t that bad, especially compared to the shit getting passed off as ‘electro’ these days.
Anyway, check this mix out, if you havn’t heard it before I know you’re going to love it.
