A Tribe Called Quest – Excursions
No seriously though, can we kick it? Cos we’re gonna — TONIGHT BABY! Yeah that’s right. In case you slept through the announcement, one of New York’s most loved rap crews A Tribe Called Quest are in Australia on their first ever tour, and will be rocking a show in Sydney this very night. Now if you DID sleep through it, we hate to say it but you are gonna be pissed… cos that shit is long sold out. But needless to say, the Cold Crush Wreckin’ Crew will be kicking it hard ce soir!
Back in the days when I was a teenager, I would bump Quest hard on my walkman. These cats are responsible for some of the all time classic party jams from the 90s, with hits like Can I Kick It?, Excursions, Scenario and Bonita Applebum under their belts just to roll off a couple, as well as famous guest spots on jams like De La Soul’s Rollerskating Jam named Saturday, and Deee-Lite’s Groove Is In The Heart. Famous for their smooth flows and funky jazz-laden sound, Quest are a rare breed in that they are loved by hip hop heads, hipsters and casual listeners alike, while never sacrificing their trademark sound. Drop a Quest joint at any party, and it’s a guarantee the floor will be jumping.
You know it — Phiphe Dawg, Q-Tip and the man Ali Shaheed are gonna be ripping up the stage tonight. Check out the official Tribe Called Quest homepage here.

A Tribe Called Quest – Can I Kick It?
Can I Kick It? was the third single from Quest’s debut album People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, and is probably their best known joint. With a funked out beat sampling Lou Reed and a pure laid back party vibe (plus THAT hook) it’s not hard to see why

The opening track on Quest’s second album Low End Theory, and my personal favourite. With a bass heavy sound and grimy beats, a sound to which Q-Tip contributes N.W.A‘s Straight Outta Compton for influence. On this joint, Q-Tip, Phiphe and Ali Shaheed bring us beats that are hard, beats that are funky — so come on everybody, let’s get with the fly modes!
